Indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring

POLARIS has instruments and competences to monitor air quality in outdoor and indoor ambient. The research group analyses the particle concentration of PM10, PM2.5, PM1 and ultrafine particles (UFP < 100nm) too

The instruments are:

  • HYDRA Dual Sampler (Fig.1- FAI Instruments S.r.l), the instrument can work with any sampling inlet (PM10, PM2.5, PM1) within the operating flow rate range 0.8 ÷ 2.5 m³/h, on two distinct independent channels.
  • SILENT Sequential Air Sampler (FAI, Fig 2) is an instrument specifically developed for particulate matter collection in indoor environment. It meets the requirements of PM sampling aimed to the chemical characterization of the collected dust in domestic environments:

UFP monitoring is performed with the use of instruments, belonging to Cassino University, which is partner of the Centre. The instruments are:

  • “Condensation Particle Counter – CPC3775 (TSI Instruments), that detects airborne particles down to 4 nm. It provides highly accurate measurements over a wide concentration range from 0 to 107 particles/cm3. This CPC is quite versatile and well-suited for a broad range of applications. (Fig 3).
  • Philips NanoTracer, a portable device and battery powered, which measures ultrafine particles smaller than 300 nanometers (Fig 4)
